Raise the Root

DAAP | Summer 2016

Programs: Google Maps,  Photoshop, Indesign, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Vray
Duration: 3 Weeks

Phases: Concept Design - Early Schematic

Site & Context

Our studio had the opportunity to work with 3CDC in Cincinnati to revive an abandoned building in Over the Rhine neighborhood. To maintain the integrity of the historic building, we were not allowed to change any columns, facades, roofs, or add any windows to the street elevation or side elevations that are adjacent to the building. My first thought that came to me when we were assigned this project was "what will the neighborhood benefit from within this space"? Ultimately, the space that I imagined is a fresh urban garden center for the community.

Raise

1. to cause or help to bring to maturity

2. to get together for a purpose

3. to increase the strength of

Root

1. something that is the origin of a source

2. the usually underground part of a seed plant body that functions as an organ of absorption, aeration, and food

Raise the Root is a retail and residential space. The program brings the community together and cultivates educational programs about cooking with local and fresh ingredients to provide a self-sustainable and healthy lifestyle.

Farmers will have a central base to collaborate with other farmers and promote their goods. This space would bring fresh ingredients to the Cincinnati neighborhoods and educate them about their local farmers.
